Tierrennor #4: Math & Terrain Basics

Math is not my strong point. I’m sure there is a brilliant and elegant method to do all of this. I chose the route of knowing one thing allows you to determine another. Start with the circumference of the world. Earth is approximately 25,000 miles around. My goal is an earth like plant so we’ll go with that. Then count the number of hexes horizontally. Divide the hex count into circumference for your base hex width. Round up or down as needed to simplify numbers. I chose not to deal with fractions or decimals in my main numbers. Hex geometry calculations were solved using free online calculators. Again, I’m no math wiz. Here are the screenshots with their values.

Terrain Type

A little further math:

Height = side to side hexes = 140 miles.

Width = vertex + side length = 240 miles.

Size of UK 600 miles high by 271 miles wide.

4.3 hexes high by 1.2 vertex + side lengths wide.

Size of USA 1,580 miles high by 2,680 miles wide.

11.3 hexes high by 11.2 vertex + side lengths wide

Map Terrain Colors:

Dark Green = sea level Lighter greens indicate low elevations.

Tans = medium elevations.

Browns = high elevations.

Use elevation and hex symbol for climate. Non marked hexes are plains, farm land or no predominate feature type.
